On Australia Day, Australia Post issues a stamp commemorating living Australian legends. In 2001, the honoree was Slim Dusty, a symbol of Australia. He was a bush balladeer inspired by the poetry of Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson. Born David Kirkpatrick in Kempsey, in 1927, he adopted the name Slim Dusty as a 10-year-old dreaming of stardom.

Today Slim’s career has spanned six decades during which he has dominated country music in Australia and won countless music industry awards. Slim Dusty is Australia’s best-selling domestic artist. He has won more gold and platinum record awards than any other Australian performer.
