The settlement of Australia was in three great waves, the first was the Aborigine, during the Dream Time, the second was the colonists from 1788, the third came after World War 2, when Australia’s population more than double over a very short period of years.

Whales

Whales are found within the southern waters of Australia as they migrate south, the designs below show only four, 24c, Sperm Whale (Physeter catodon also know as Physeter macrocephalus); 35c, Southern Right Whale (Enbalaena australis); 55c, Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus); 60c, Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae).

Roses in Australia

This issue’s design shows four roses grown in Australia, in actual fact Australia does not have any native roses as they all come from the Northern Hemisphere, but, they thrive in the Australian conditions, 27c, Marjorie Atherton, fragrant double blooms in maize-yellow, disease resistant & fragrant with dense foliage; 40c, Imp, long lasting white flowers margined in deep red, dark green foliage; 65c, Minnie Watson, light salmon pink blooms with compact glossy foliage & a slight fragrance; 75c, Satellite, deep crimson blooms with glossy foliage & a strong fragrance.

50th Anniversary of the ABC

This issue commemorates 50 years of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (as it was known) it is now the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the two 27c designs produced Se-tenant, show an announcer & a microphone on one stamp & the ABC logo on the other.

Christmas 1982

Part 1

This issue was released in two parts, Part 1, September (below) & Part 2, November (fourth issue down), the themes were Early Australian Christmas Cards, the design for this 35c, stamp is “A Spray of Wattle surrounding a Graphic Monochrome of Sydney Harbour” with the words, “Health, Wealth and Happiness in the coming YEAR.”  The designs were produced in 1881 and came from the collection of Ray Chapman, MBE, FRPSL, RPD.

XII Commonwealth Games, Brisbane

This issue celebrates the Commonwealth Games, based on the Olympic Games, but only athletes from member nations of the Commonwealth may compete, the games are held every four years, four 27c stamps were issued, the sports featured are Boxing; Archery; Weightlifting & Pole Vaulting, a Miniature Sheet was also produced, although with a different perforation to the stamps, this Miniature Sheet was also Overprinted for the ANPEX 82, The Australian National Philatelic Exhibition, Brisbane Queensland, 11 – 17 October, (both Miniature Sheets are shown below. (the ANPEX Sheetlet has had the ni8mbering removed by design).

Issued to celebrate National Stamp Week, the design is a reproduction (stamp on stamp) of the 5/- Sydney Harbour Bridge stamp, first released 14 March, 1932.

Opening of the Australian National Gallery, Canberra

This issue was commemorates the opening of the National Gallery, Canberra by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the building is located in what is known as the “Parliamentary Triangle”, the building is in good company as the two other buildings on the two hectare site are the new High Court and the new Parliament House, the design is an Aboriginal bark painting of Gurgurr, the moon man.

Aboriginal Culture in Music and Dance

This issue was the first time actual Aboriginal work appeared on Australian stamps, the designs are all bark paintings of Mimi spirits dancing, 27c, by David Milaybuma; 40c, by Lofty Nabardayal; 65c, Jimmy Galareya; 75c, Dick Nguleingulei-Murrumurru.

Eucalypts Booklets Definitives

Issued only from Vending Machines

This is the first time in twenty odd years that Australian stamps were produced off-shore, the designs show five different eucalypt species, 1c, the Rosea, commonly known as the Pink Flowered Marri; 2c, the Caesia, often called by it’s Aboriginal name, Gungurru, one of the most beautiful eucalypts; 3c, Ficifolia, commonly called the Red or Scarlet Flowering Gum; 10c, Globulus, commonly known as the Tasmanian Blue Gum, one of the fastest growing trees in the world; 27c, Forrestiana, commonly known as Forest’s Marlock, named after Sir John Forrest, surveyor, explorer & past Premier of Western Australia.  The stamps were produced in a different Se-tenant strip for each booklet, the values were 60c, comprising two each, 1c, 2c & 27c stamps & the $1, comprising one each 3c & 10c, two each 1c & 2c and three 27c stamps, all stamps are Imperforate one side with the 27c being Imperforate on one & two sides.
